How Belly Fat And Heart Attack Risk Are Connected?
Belly fat causes the triglycerides levels in our body to rise and research has shown that fat belly and elevated triglycerides increase the chances of a heart attack dramatically. Here is how it happens:
1. It is important to remember that our bodies make triglycerides from sugar and that abdominal obesity comes from high blood insulin levels.
2. When food is consumed, it increases the levels of blood sugar in the body.
3. On the other hand, our pancreases release insulin, to prevent the blood sugar from rising abnormally.
4. Insulin converts blood sugar to triglyceride, which is a type of fat. Triglycerides also get driven into the fat cells in the belly.
5. High triglycerides levels and a fat belly are strong indicators of high blood insulin levels.
6. High blood levels of insulin cause arteries to constrict which leads to heart attacks. It is important to know that fat cells in the belly are not the same type of cells compared to fat cells in the hips. Whereas the blood with belly fat goes directly to the liver, while the blood from the hips goes into the body for general circulation. Because belly fat reaches the liver, those with belly fat end up with livers that are blocked. This reduces its capability to remove insulin from the blood of the person. On the other hand, people who have fatty hips have no such problems of the liver function.
7. People with belly fat usually tend to have higher blood insulin and sugar levels compared to people who have fatty hips.
8. This condition raises the levels of the bad LDL cholesterol in the blood stream and lower levels of the good HDL cholesterol. While HDL cholesterol prevents heart attacks, LDL cholesterol causes heart attacks.
